The Grammar of Poetry is a video course and textbook that teaches the mechanics of poetry by using the classical approach of imitation. It is designed for the 6-9th grade level, but is also appropriate for older children and adults seeking to achieve a better knowledge of how poetry works. Its goal is to teach your child to analyze not only poetry, but words and language in general. Just as an English course would teach a student the different parts of speech, so also the Grammar of Poetry teaches a student the building blocks of poetry, enabling the student to effectively engage in the language of poetry, in literature, and in non-literal language.
Grammar of Poetry has 30 chapters divided into 9 modules. Each module begins with a lesson that teaches a trope (or image) of poetry, followed by a lesson teaching an element of the “music” of poetry. The module concludes with an imitation lesson which allows the student to imitate and put into practice what he just learned. Most lessons are 15-20 min long, with the “Imitation” lessons being a bit shorter.

“I think it’s important for Christian students to be well spoken, and I don’t think that’s possible without an acquaintance with how poetry works.” – Douglas Wilson on Grammar of Poetry
“The Grammar of Poetry is designed to put the fundamentals in place regardless of what age you are. Part of preparing our children for the world around them is equipping them to communicate with people on a non-literal level, to understand what has been written (the great conversation throughout time), and to interact with culture today.” – Matt Whitling, author of Grammar of Poetry and Principal at Logos School
“I created the homeschool video course I would have wanted to take myself!” – Daniel Foucachon, Producer & homeschooled overseas.
